There is more to this little story than just scholarships.
It has more to do with a relationship. Scholarships certainly play an important
role in the relationship that exists between the Heart Of Texas Chorus and Texas
State University, but there is so much more. To cite a few examples;
Dr. Richard Cheatham, Dean of the School of Fine Arts and
Communication, has performed (to rave reviews) on each of the annual “United We
Sing” concerts produced by the Chorus since 2003. He serves on the Chorus
Advisory Board and he attends all of our shows. There are numerous examples of
his support and it has been so much more than we could have anticipated.
Suffice it to say, the Chorus is truly grateful for his support. Dr. Cheatham
was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Chorus in January of 2007.
Our Music Director, Ron Black, became a member of the Texas
State University Music Department faculty at the beginning of the 2006 fall
semester and established the University Men’s Chorus. Some of those students
have become members of the Heart Of Texas Chorus.
Fans of Texas State basketball and volleyball have
undoubtedly witnessed the Chorus performing our National Anthem. This happens
several times during the seasons.
As far as scholarships are concerned, over the past several
years, the Heart Of Texas Chorus has proudly donated more than $20,000 to the
University for deserving Music Majors selected by the Music Department. As long
as the Heart Of Texas Chorus can draw a collective breath, our plan is to
continue providing the scholarships. We see it as a definite “win-win”
relationship.
