COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Heart Of Texas Chorus serves communities in the Central Texas Area through song. We have performed at churches in Austin, San Marcos, New Braunfels and San Antonio. We provide all the special music for the service and it gives the church choirs an opportunity to take a day off and gives the congregations a chance to experience the wonderful music presented by the Heart Of Texas Chorus. The chorus recently provided music for the Sunday morning service at St Matthews Episcopal Church in Austin.

Every year since 2003, on or about September 11, we have presented the “United We Sing” concert in San Marcos. This concert is free to all and features performers from the San Marcos area and Texas State University, as well as a community chorus and the Heart Of Texas Chorus. The concert is a patriotic tribute to the men and women of our military and also serves as a reminder of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. There was an additional focus at the 2005 concert as the Red Cross was invited to set up a donation table in the lobby and attendees donated more than $600 to aid victims of hurricane Katrina.

In July 2005, the chorus represented the four-state Southwestern District at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Contest in Salt Lake City, Utah. While it was a great thrill to sing on the international stage and place 12th in the contest, an even greater thrill occurred on the day preceding the contest. We performed for about 60 children ranging from preschool to high school age at the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind. When our performance was over, there was not a dry eye among the chorus members. It was a moving experience for us and the kids loved it. The Head Nurse told us that she was overwhelmed by our performance, especially when she saw several students who had not been responding to the efforts of her staff responding to us. Music has the power to have this kind of positive affect on people and that is certainly high among the reasons we love to do what we do. We went away with a wonderful feeling, knowing that we brightened the day of that bunch of kids!

The chorus has performed several times to benefit the Hays County United Way, has performed during Sights and Sounds of Christmas in San Marcos since 1999, and regularly performs the National Anthem at Texas State University volleyball and basketball games. Another recent performance was for the Mid Winter Convention of the Texas Vietnam Veteran’s Association. As is usually the case, the chorus received standing ovations during that show.

The Heart Of Texas Chorus was invited to give a special performance for Iraq burn victims, their families and the troops at Ft. Sam Houston/Brooke Army Medical Center (Soldier Assistance Center). The event was broadcast live on AM 550 in San Antonio and was also filmed for later television distribution. This performance was an inspiration for the men of the Heart Of Texas Chorus and an opportunity for us to express, in music, our appreciation for the sacrifices these soldiers have made.
